Affirmative and Negative sentences Affirmative sentences is a term used to refer to sentences that are positive. Negative sentences , on the other hand, are those sentences that refer to the non-occurrence of an action. Transforming an Affirmative Sentence into a Negative Sentence – Rules The first thing you will have to do is to locate the main verb in the sentence. Once you do, the next step is to add ‘not’ after all forms of the ‘to be’ verb (am, is, are, was, were), modal verbs (will, would, shall, should, can, may, might, etc.), and for Have verb (has, have, had). You have to use the verb forms for ‘do’ followed by ‘not’ and ‘have’ to make the sentence negative.
